They Called Him a Charlatan, A Crackpot, And A Nut

Who am I talking about?

Obama? Gingrich? Ron Paul? Chris Matthews?

While all of the above would fill the bill, I’m not
talking politics today.

Back in 1968, which seems like a lifetime ago,
history’s youngest Mr. Universe was holding court
on Muscle Beach, in California. While soaking up
the sun, and admiration, the 21 year old champ
made the mistake of accepting a chin up, and push
up challenge, from a 54 year old man.

The young Mr. Universe lost the challenge…badly.

So who were the two men? The 21 year old was
Arnold Schwarzenegger and the 54 year old was
Jack LaLanne.

Arnold later joked that Lalanne is French for
"do some push ups…you lazy bastard."

Lalanne was the guy being called names.
Newspapers claimed his drills would cause
hemorrhoids. Physicians warned that cardio
would cause heart attacks in men and that
weight training would wreck a woman’s figure,
a myth that is still making the rounds today,
in some quarters.

Jack Lalanne never stopped delivering his

message of regular exercise and proper nutrition.
His message is now being delivered by tens of
thousands of wellness experts, including me.
Jack Lalanne was the first guy to publicly talk
about hydration, stretching, a diet rich in fruits and
vegetables and resistance training. He started
his ministry in 1936, when nobody was listening.

He was one of the first to see the dangers of the
consumption of too much sugar, twenty years
before high fructose corn syrup was introduced
into the food manufacturing business. He was
telling people not to eat calorie dense, sugar loaded,
preservative, and chemically charged food, decades
before anyone else.

Jack LaLanne was the godfather of today’s fitness
movement. He lived his life as an example, to show
people he practiced what he preached.

He made the first fitness videos, he first advocated
changing your routine to avoid plateaus, he pioneered
working muscles to failure, water aerobics, and plyometrics.
He spawned the "prevention" movement, and he popularized
the use of supplements.

Jack died last year, at the ripe old age of 96. He worked
out for two hours the day before he died.

He wrote, "When I pass on to that great gym in the sky, I
want no more than for people to say: He was marvelously
alive!"

And remember young Arnold’s advice too: "Get off your
lazy ass…and do some pushups!"
