The 5 Most Common Causes Of Headaches

More and more people I know are complaining about headaches, and what they are doing about it isn’t really the answer. I would say that a huge percentage of people who have a headache reach for a bottle of aspirin, or ibuprofen, or even an anti-depressant. This response is almost automatic, because advertising has most of the public convinced that this is the answer.

It isn’t. Aspirin, ibuprofen, or other analgesics only treat the symptoms of headache, not the cause.

Let’s examine some causes of headaches.

Number one on my list would be:  Sleep deprivation.

Studies have shown that if you sleep less than six hours a night, you’ll tend to have more frequent and more severe headaches than those who sleep eight hours, or more.

Number two would be:  Caffeine

I can speak personally about this, and when I decaffeinated myself years ago, my own headaches went away.

Number three would be: Skipping meals, particularly breakfast.

Not only will skipping meals give you a headache, it will cause you to overeat, later in the day.

Coming at number four would be:  Dehydration.

Many people substitute coffee, sodas, fruit drinks, and alcohol for water, and that’s a big mistake. You need a 1/2 ounce of water for every pound you weigh, and more if you exercise vigorously. If you’re a 200 pound man, you need 100 ounces of water every day (that’s more than the 64 ounces recommended in all nutrition books, which are way off the mark). If you’re a 200 pound man who exercises vigorously, you probably need close to 200 ounces of water.

Many people immediately say that’s too much, but if you have them keep a food diary, and add up all the crap they are drinking, it sometimes easily exceeds that amount.

Your body wants and needs pure water, not the other stuff.

At number five, I would put two things:  Being overweight and inactive.

A recent study found that Lardassians, with a BMI (Body Mass Index) over 30, had a greater risk of headaches. When the BMI got up to 40, the frequency of headaches increased considerably . Other studies have proven that physically inactive people never get their “feel good” endorphins going. Physically inactive people also have a hard time relieving stress, and getting blood up to the brain.

The daily consumption of extremely high quality fish oil, such as my Powerhouse Omega Formula, seems to help in the fight against headaches.

So does the consumption of magnesium rich foods, such as spinach, barley, white beans, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds.

Getting a handle on the 5 reasons I outlined will help too. Get a proper amount of sleep, ditch the caffeine, don’t skip meals, drink lots of water, and get moving. Eat real food, and take my Powerhouse Omega Formula every day.
