So Trans Fats Can Shrink Your Brain Eh

On the corner of my desk is a stack of papers, all 

related to trans fats, that stuff, that when ingested

in the old pie hole, makes us blow up like a balloon. 

Trans fats are used in almost everything related to

food that comes in a package.

Not only are they in everything packaged, but the

government has allowed manufacturers to get very,

very creative with their labels; which makes it look 

like they aren’t in the package, when they ARE. The

best defense is to not eat any packaged food.

Our Canadian friends have been studying the effects

of trans fats on the brain and what they are finding is

pretty amazing, eh?

In the last decade, diagnostic equipment that can 

study the brain has been improving by leaps and 

bounds. Researchers have found that people that

eat too much fast food, or packaged food, can have 

the same kind of brain shrinkage associated with

Alzheimer’s Disease.

Here are a couple of the highlights of the study:

People who had high levels of circulating trans fats had 

less brain volume. They also had poorer memory, attention

span, language and processing speed skills.

People with higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids had 

better executive function…the ability to plan, solve,

multi-task and perform other functions…as well as fewer

white matter lesions, on their brain scans.
