Rest In Peace Joe Paterno

The news reports say that Joe Paterno died of complications
from the chemotherapy that he was taking for lung cancer. I
think he died from a broken heart, over the "Sandusky affair,"
that ended his tenure as the longest serving coach of a Division
football team.

Now the same people who rushed to demonize the 85 year old
coach are trying to canonize him. It makes me think of an old
political adage, "If you want a lifelong friend, get a dog." On
the radio today, there were some sportscasters talking about
what happened at Penn State as being a "revenge crime."
According to these idiots, any crime involving children is a
"revenge crime," where somebody has to pay. The trouble
with this theory is that "the somebody" isn’t usually the actual
perpetrator of the crime, which in this case is allegedly Jerry
Sandusky (and Pennsylvania State University).

Did Paterno share some blame here? Yes. Did he do the right
thing? Yes…and no. Sometimes you have to do more than the
right thing. But did he deserve the treatment he got from the
University and the media? Probably not.

In the media efforts to demonize Paterno, nobody has heard much
about Sandusky and even less about the University. The University,
which is the biggest business in Pennsylvania, has retreated behind
its walls, and only sends out the attorneys, who spend a long time
saying nothing. They’ll keep this up, as long as it takes for the story
to take a new course, which it will have to, now that Uncle Joe is gone.

Or, they might just lay all the blame at a dead man’s feet, which in
Washington is called the "Potomac Two Step." They’ll work hard to
not expose the fact that their lawyers have been aware of this situation
since 1998. They won’t reveal that Paterno was told to keep quiet
about the whole situation and that the lawyers were handling it.

The unsettling truth about child abuse scandals is that rarely do
we ever get to the truth of what really happened and who was
involved. Sandusky didn’t set this whole sordid mess in motion,
just for himself. There absolutely had to be other adults involved,
and some of them are still part of the fabric of the University and
its sub cultures, such as boosters and alumni organizations. I’m
betting we don’t find out a single piece of information about who
else was involved.

Joe Paterno did much for Penn State. It could be argued that it
would still be a sleepy little mountain town, were it not for him and
the good will he brought, wherever he took his football team.

The moral of the Joe Paterno story is this: Listen to your attorneys,
and the university’s attorneys, and then do… whatever is the right thing
to do, even if it isn’t what they recommend. Joe drank the University’s
koolaid and then, they dropped a manure truck on him.

As far as the other perverts in this case, and there have to be a bunch,
I’m ready to bring out the electric bleachers again, since a single chair
isn’t enough. Maybe if several dozen, or several hundred, of these
pedophiles went up in smoke, together…it would be harder for them to
operate.
