Never Accept A Drink From A Urologist
Posted: June 24th, 2011 | Author: Dr. Bill Stillwell | No Comments »Today’s title reminds me of a missive I wrote
about whether you should accept weight loss
advice from a fat nutritionist. In case you were
wondering about that, the answer is no.
When I was a kid, the best doctor I had chain
smoked. He would walk in the room with a nice
butt hanging out of his mouth, put it down, and
through the course of the exam, he would light
up a few more times. He often wheezed and
hacked his way through all the procedures and
when I broke my nose, he admonished me not to
smoke, after he packed my nose up with yards
of gauze, smoking the entire time.
My mother would demand everything I was
wearing after any trip to his office. She often
mumbled that she was surprised that the clinic
didn’t burn down, because all the doctors smoked.
It wasn’t until later that I learned that they all drank to
excess too, but that’s another story. She did have
a great story about one of the doctors, standing in
the ER telling a nurse, "Emily…I can’t get a pulse!"
The nurse walked over and put the earbuds for the
stethoscope in his ears. "Try it now," she said.
"That’s better," he said.
In the weight loss business, there are a lot of people
who don’t know which end is up. Unfortunately, this
includes health professionals, who often talk solutions,
but don’t live them.
They often prescribe medications with a host of side
effects, relying on drugs, rather than lifestyle changes.
There are trainers with a one-size-fits-all solution and
trainers that don’t really know how the human body functions,
even though they should know better.
Here are a couple of hard and fast rules:
1) Never be afraid to ask hard questions.
True professionals will take the time to answer them, or if
they can’t, they’ll refer you to someone who can.
2) If it causes pain, stop. Immediately.
The only exception to this would be in qualified physical therapy,
supervised by a doctor. There are some therapies that will be painful
in the beginning, but that pain should dissipate, not get stronger.
3) Changes in lifestyle bring big results.
Changing your diet, getting some sun and exercise and getting
proper supplements will do more for you than drug therapy, any
day of the week.
4) Laugh.
I shouldn’t have to explain this, but the more you laugh, the
healthier you’ll be.
I’ll be back tomorrow with more.
With my best wishes for your optimum health,
Dr. Bill
