Is Organic Any Better
Posted: November 30th, 2011 | Author: Dr. Bill Stillwell | No Comments »I was walking around in a large grocery store, lately, onethat is particularly popular with the organic crowd. Youcan tell you’re in the right place by the number of Volvoautomobiles parked outside. And by the bumper stickers.
I was there because the produce in my regular store justwasn’t up to par, this week, many of the shelves being empty, and others containing products past their prime.
I decided to stray into packaged products and I wassurprised at the number of aisles of junk food in "the temple."Not only were there just as many choices of potato chips, cheese curls, crackers and other junk, but people were fillingtheir carts with them. I checked a few labels and, though someof this crap was labeled organic, it certainly stretched thedefinition of "healthy."
Here’s an example. Potato chips, baptized as organic, had 370mg of sodium per serving. A serving is described as 1/2 ounce,
which is probably no more than 5-10 chips. Since any normal
person would eat more than that, more like 3-4 ounces, even ifthey had pretty good self control, the sodium content alone in anormal serving would be more than 1500mg, way higher than youmight need for an entire day, and that’s not counting any other"healthy" thing that you might eat.
I headed back to the produce section, found some very nicecauliflower, some gorgeous Brussel sprouts and some greatlooking pears. As I got in line to check out, I noticed that a good .number of the people on line were rather large. Using my eagleeyes, I perused some of the stuff they were buying. Sure enough, about half of what was hitting the belt was junk food, of one sortor another.
I had an urge to stand up on that belt and give a sermon, but I stifled myself, paid my bill and headed home. Thisstore appeals to the better educated, supposedly smartgroup of people, many of whom favor the nanny state. It turns out that they are just as gullible as the poorer folksthey want to help (as in those overweight "chirren" they arealways talking about.)
Just as a rose is a rose is a rose, junk food is junk food isjunk food…and it makes you fat. The organic label just makesit more expensive to get that way (and that’s assuming you canbelieve it).
