I Can’t Believe I Ate All That Food

I’m sitting on the deck after a wonderful 4th of July with family and friends. The weather cooperated, even though the sun disappeared for copious amounts of time. But thankfully there was no rain to spoil the outdoor festivities, which included some delicious BBQ.

At Saturday’s shindig I had some of the best BBQ I have ever sampled, the recipes coming from a cookbook by a guy named Adam Perry Lang, who owns a BBQ joint in NYC called “Daisy Mae’s” on 10th Avenue. Let me tell all you BBQ fans, this guy knows what he’s talking about, whether it’s beef, pork, chicken…it was all awesome, and next time I’m in NY I know where I’m headed to lunch.

And I haven’t even talked about all the side dishes…can you tell I love to eat good food?

Last night before bed I was doing a little channel surfing, and I caught a bit of one of these fitness shows on what else…The Fitness Channel. The episode was all about a guy who was trying to lose weight and who had a problem with family gatherings where there were great quantities of food not on his meal plan.

There was all kinds of angst involved, and guilt, and lots of other BS thrown in for good measure. But the real problem was that the guy couldn’t deviate even a little from his plan, even though it was pointed out to him that eating small portions of what was served wouldn’t hurt him at all, and might even have been better than some of the stuff he was eating.

One thing that bothered me was that he was eating a lot of “diet food,” which included a lot of no fat and low fat foods, which are loaded with sugar, and don’t help you in the long run. He also had a diet soda in his hand constantly, almost like a baby with a pacifier.

Then he had to call his trainer for any decisions he had to make. But my big question was why would a good trainer let him eat all that crap? You would think that a good trainer would know what kind of damage all that artificial food does to your system.

I’m not knocking food plans. I have one for myself, and most of the time I follow it. But I allow myself to go off the reservation every now and then. This weekend was one of them. But I got back in the saddle last night, and had a nice salad. But I certainly wasn’t going to go to a BBQ and only eat the carrot salad, and pickled beets. (And hold the tofu…please.)

One thing I never do is miss taking my Powerhouse Omega Formula. That truly makes a difference in how I feel, not whether I ate a little too much BBQ. It’s better to be a shade pork plus than omega 3 deficient. I’m going to stop before the puritanical health gods cast me out as a heretic.

But I can state unequivocally, no lard was used in the making of this email.
