Ed Begley Wants You To Read The Peer Reviewed Studies

While piloting my Barcalounger 3 through unexplored territory a
few nights ago, around 3 AM, I listened to Ed Begley expound on
the environment. Ed is a true believer the green movement and
even had a TV show about himself, for a few minutes, called
"Living with Ed."

In the show, Ed wastes a lot of time showing how much he cares
about the planet and goes to some rather ridiculous lengths to
accomplish very little. He also visits with other Hollywood greenies
to show what they have done to make this a better world. Some
might argue that he’s up against impossible odds here, because
if there were ever a Love Canal West, it would be Hollywood.

In the show, Ed is confronted by someone who doesn’t believe that
the moonshine he is selling is free of worms. Instead of calmly
debating the issue, Ed goes ballastic and starts screaming,
"Read the peer reviewed studies! Read the peer reviewed studies!"
Like this would convince anyone who had doubts.

Here’s a little something you might not know.

Every year…every year…hundreds of peer reviewed studies are
retracted. Some of these retractions involve no clear malfeasance;
the authors themselves often detect errors and retract their own
work.

A high percentage of retractions though, entail plagiarism, false
authorship, or cooked data. While Ed Begley will never admit it,
we now know that hundreds of scientists worldwide "cooked"
the data on which many hysterical environmental claims are made.
They had their reasons for this, chief among them money and
self advancement.

Here is an example of a retracted "peer reviewed study."

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is caused by a virus.

Chronic fatigues syndrome (CFS) is a disorder of unknown origin.
Some researchers, in fact, consider this a psychological disorder,
largely confined to wealthier countries, affecting more women than
men.

Then came a study published in Science, in October 2009, by
researchers from the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno.
The researchers associated CFS with something called
"xenotropic murine leukemia virus" (XMRV), which they said
they found in blood samples of patients with CFS.

CFS advocates were elated. At last, here was proof that their
disease was real, they said. Retrovirus experts, on the other hand,
were skeptical. Maybe the blood samples were contaminated.
It turns out that the paper is likely wrong. No other lab could
reproduce the results.

Science issued an "Editorial Expression of Concern" in July,
after the authors refused to retract their paper. The Science
Editorial states bluntly that the study purported "to show that
XMRV was present in the blood of 67% of patients with CFS
compared to 3.7% of healthy controls.

Since then, at least 10 studies conducted by other investigators
and published elsewhere have reported a failure to detect XMRV
in independent populations of CFS patients."

The authors finally issued a partial retraction in September,
removing data now known to be from contaminated sources.
Science followed with a full retraction on December 23rd.

Meanwhile, in a disturbing twist, senior author Judy Mikovits
was fired from Whittemore Peterson Institute and arrested in
California in November, over charges of possession of stolen
property and the unlawful taking of computer data, equipment
and supplies.

Science is now investigating whether data for the study was,
in fact, manipulated.

The fact is that "peer reviewed studies" does not an argument
make, even if a true believer like Ed Begley is saying it. A
study has to actually stand up to be believable, which means
it has to be tested independently and reproduced by others. In
many published studies of the environmentalists, we know that
data was manipulated, computer models were badly flawed,
many "independent reviews" were faked and evidence that did
not support the conclusions reached was destroyed.

many others.
