Big Hoss Loses 115 Pounds

Last night, I watched an episode of the hit cable

show, "Pawn Stars." The series is built around
three family members and the friend of the youngest
family member. The younguns’ names are Corey,
(Big Hoss), and Chumlee. Both of them are seriously
overweight and the fact that they are young makes
it much worse.

A reader sent me a story about Big Hoss losing 115
pounds, along with photos. He looks one helluva lot
better with the weight off. According to the story, Big
Hoss had lap band surgery, and he’s working out five
days a week, with a personal trainer. He is also doing
Krav Maga, which is an Israeli self defense form.

The show "Pawn Stars" is a look inside the pawn
business, about which I know almost nothing. The interplay
between the grandpa, father and son is pretty honest
and straightforward and they often disagree with each
other about their transactions. Chumlee, Big Hoss’s
childhood friend, is the comic relief and the butt of many
insults hurled by the family members. Many people I
know watch the show, not for family members, but for
Chumlee. Last week, I saw someone wearing a Tshirt
that said, "Chumlee for President," and I thought, "Why
not?" (Certainly couldn’t do worse, could he?)

Big Hoss was diagnosed with pre-diabetes, which is
why he decided to lose weight. He had lap band surgery,
which restricts the size of your stomach. People who
have this procedure done can only take in a small amount
of food at a time. A number of famous people have had
this procedure done, like Al Roker, Carnie Wilson, and
Randy Jackson, from "American Idol."

It doesn’t always work. Carnie Wilson has managed to
gain weight back, in spite of the procedure. So have
many others, and some doctors put the procedure in
the "dangerous" category.

I would put it in the "last resort" category, because I
know that you can lose weight without surgery, and that’s
much safer. But Big Hoss is now a TV star and that
puts him a different category. It wouldn’t surprise me if
Chumlee followed his example and I sure hope he does
something, because carrying that load will break him
down like a General Motors product.

If he sees this email, he can find my plan right here:

My favorite Chumlee storyline is the one where Rick
sends him out to have Bob Dylan autograph an album,
so he can sell it at a premium price. Chumlee tracks
Dylan down, and Dylan asks him what his name is.
He says, "Chumlee." Dylan the writes, "To Chumlee,
Best Wishes, Bob Dylan."

Chumlee takes it back to Rick, who then notices the
autograph is addressed to Chumlee, which makes it
worthless to him, and he goes ballistic. Chumlee just
shakes his head, like "Huh?"

I’ll be back tomorrow with more.

With my best wishes for your optimum health,

Dr. Bill
