Are You Taking The Fountain Of Youth?
Posted: August 25th, 2010 | Author: Dr. Bill Stillwell | No Comments »While we are busy living, we are are also busy burning our cells.
Our cells, billions of them, actually determine how long we are
going to live. Inside each cell is a genetic timeclock, which
determines how long that cell is going to last.
Scientists at the University of California at San Fransisco have
found that fish oil may be the true elixir of youth. According to a
study done there, fish oil slows down the genetic “fuse” that
determines the lifetime of cells.
In the past, I have written that fish oil protects against heart
disease, improves survival rates after a heart attack, reduces
mental decline in old age and helps protect your eyes, among many
other things.
Although we know omega-3′s have powerful effects, the mechanisms
behind these effects are not very well understood. This new research
shows that omega-3 fatty acids have a direct effect on biological
aging, by slowing down your “burn rate.”
Let me explain. Your chromosomes have a protective cap on their ends
and as you age, the caps gets smaller. The caps are called
telomeres, which are copied strands of DNA that have a function like
the plastic end of shoelaces. They prevent the ends of the
chromosomes from becoming damaged and they keep the cell nucleus
organized and contained.
Each time a cell divides, its telomeres get shorter, until a
critical point is reached. The DNA then becomes damaged and the
cells stop dividing, becomes senescent (old) and eventually dies. In
this way, the telomere is like a biological fuse.
The rate at which the fuse “burns” can vary between individual
people and individual cells. This is believed to have an impact on
age related diseases.
The study, conducted on 608 patients over 5 years, showed clearly
that there was a direct correlation with omega-3 fatty acid intake.
Those with the highest intake of omega-3′s had the shortest and
slowest rate of telomere shortening. Those with the lowest intake of
omega-3′s had the highest rate of telomere shortening.
In other words, those people taking fish oil had the slowest burn
rate and those not taking it had the highest. These findings clearly
show that fish oil has an anti-aging effect and the consumption of
fish oil protects against cellular aging. That means you will live
longer and healthier, providing you get some exercise and eat right.

Ponce de Leon left Spain looking for the Fountain of Youth a few
centuries ago. Little did he know that he could have stayed home and
had it delivered to his doorstep.
I’ll be tomorrow with more.
With my best wishes for your optimum health,
Dr. Bill
