Are You Getting Enough Omega 3s In Your Diet
Posted: August 31st, 2011 | Author: Dr. Bill Stillwell | No Comments »I thought that today I would go back to basics. If you’ve
been following this column for a bit, you know I like to
opine on everything under the sun. If I talked about
medicine every day, even the medical personnel would
get bored. But today, I’m going back to the product that
I first introduced a couple of dozen moons ago.
Back in February of 2009, I started offering my Powerhouse
Omega Formula, a pharmaceutical grade fish oil that puts
some very important nutrients back into your body that almost
no one today gets by eating, alone.
According to Dr. David Leopold, the Director of Integrative
Medicine at the Scripps Center, in San Diego, pretty much
everybody is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids. This is why you
have to reintroduce them and balance out what you should have.
20 years ago, a recommendation from a doctor to take fish
oil supplements just wouldn’t happen, unless he, or she, was
pioneering the field of alternative medicine. But things have
changed in the past few years and what was once considered
outside current medical thinking…is now moving into the
mainstream of Medicine.
There have been so many studies done, that show positive
effects at all ages, that many of the walls of opposition are
falling down. Not all of them, mind you, but enough to make
a serious impact.
There are a number of benefits for fish oil, but near the top of
the list is their anti-inflammatory effect. Inflammation is regarded
as a major contributing cause for heart disease, arthritis and
many other chronic illnesses. Omega-3′s "cool the body off," toning
down inflammation, and help to prevent some of these diseases.
Omega-3′s have been shown to have a positive effect on depression
and other psychiatric conditions.
Omega-3′s can slash triglyceride levels by 20 to 50%. That is one of their
most consistent and reliable health promoting effects.
Omega-3′s can help in the cognitive development of children and
reduce their risk of developing ADHD and asthma, as teens.
If you already have heart disease, or have had a heart attack,
omega-3′s cut your risk of complications and death. They also
likely reduce your risk of stroke.
Another benefit of omega-3′s is that they can reduce your need
for other medications. Many patients, who take omega-3′s on a
regular basis, have been able to reduce the dosages of medications
prescribed. (Always consult you physician here…do not reduce
medications on your own.)
Fish oil…it isn’t just for hippies, anymore. Around here, we
pronounce that "high pies." In another few years, almost all
doctors will be recommending the use of fish oil. Just
remember that you get what you pay for. If you want that
foul-smelling stuff found on the shelves of stores, don’t
be surprised by the trots, horrendous belching and bad
breath.
When you’re looking for a first class product, with an enteric
coating, look here:
That enteric coating makes sure that the soft gel travels
all the way to your small intestine, before it dissolves. That
virtually guarantees you’ll never be burping up fish.
I’ll be back tomorrow with more.
With my best wishes for your optimum health,
Dr. Bill
