Last week, I met up with an old friend of mine who owns
and runs a small, highly successful company that provides
executive protection services. Right now, he has around two
dozen clients, scattered around the world.
The kind of service he provides is very expensive. To
give you an example, a four person team runs north of $100K
a month… and the client must also feed and shelter the
team. That’s a little more than I can pony up, on my best
day.
His people are highly skilled in weapons and hand
to hand combat and many have expertise in several martial
arts. Most of them speak several languages and they all
have skills that would surpass what Tom Cruise has on
display in his Mission Impossible movies.
He had invited me in to watch the physical test
administered to anyone that wants a job with his
company. When we got to the site, I saw a sign that said
"Thunder Road."
What it amounted to was a ten mile torture test. There
were 15 applicants, 13 men and 2 women. The rules
are simple. If you don’t finish, you take the first bus out
of Dodge. The Thunder Road course was designed by a
couple of guys with impeccable credentials in the world
of dark arts.
My friend told me that in a group of fifteen, possibly one
would make to the finish line. He took me on a tour of what
was waiting for the applicants and let me tell you…I don’t
think that I would have made it to Station 2.
He told me me a very funny story about a group of
wannabeeze, who hung out in a gym, pumping iron and
talking a big game about toughness and their abilities.
They had no idea who he was, or what he did. One day,
he told them that he knew somebody who was looking
for some really tough guys and the pay was really high.
They were on him in a flash, and tried to convince him,
on the spot, that they were just the kind of guys who
should be hired on the spot. He told them they had to
pass a test called Thunder Road. He set it up on a Friday
and all of them showed up.
He had one of his guys explain the rules and all of
them insisted on getting started right away. Of the
eight that started, seven were out before Station 1
and the lone survivor made it, almost to Station 2. He
could see the sign from where he was lying.
As the tough guys were leaving, one of them stopped
and said, "How many stations were there?"
In the test I saw, two people made it through the course,
which is highly unusual: one man and one woman. The rest
were buried between Stations 4 and 6. I just laughed
thinking about the "tough guys," who hardly made it out
of the gate.
There is more to strength than just pumping iron. Big
muscles are no indicator of good health. They are two
completely different things. It’s been my experience
that too much pumping is actually a bad thing. It may
keep you looking good in your twenties, but once you
pass that milestone, injuries are bound to happen and
many are serious, especially for guys who like to work
with heavy weights. More than once I’ve heard the scream
of a musclehead, when something tore in his leg, or arm,
or chest.
One of the things I noticed about my friend’s guys, was
that they looked unremarkable. They just looked like
the guy next door, until they started moving, when they
had the quality of cats. Cats don’t have that bulked-up
look, like they are tough, but as many a dog knows, you
fight a cat at your own peril.
Most of us don’t have the physical ability to get through
Thunder Road, but we can be healthier than the typical
gym rat, who is usually all flash and no cash. Find out
