Over the weekend I attended a rather large event where it was almost like an old country fair, except that there were a lot of booths taken up by various political organizations, and what you could have called health officials, except that what they were peddling was a crock.
I thought I would take a tour of the “health tents” and amuse myself a bit. Upon entering I was given some sun screen as a gift, and told it would really come in handy. Then I received some anti-bacterial soap which I was told I could use anytime I needed it. Then came anti-bacterial wipes for the grand kids in case they got dirty. At this point I started laughing, and headed out of the tent. I’d had enough for one day.
As I walked toward the smell of the food tents I started recalling my childhood, where like most children, I got a good amount of sun in the summertime. Back in those days we didn’t have sun block with SPF 99. I even got a sunburn once or twice, and my mother used vinegar on me, which took away some of the sting, and I wore a large Tshirt for a day or two, then went back to being shirtless like everyone else.
We also got pretty dirty in those days, and we may have washed our hands to eat lunch, or dinner, and the only way we got clean was in the swimming pool. Then we’d go back to getting dirty again.
In the summer I had until dark to get home, and then it was straight to the bathtub before I was allowed to anywhere else in the house. I remember leaving some fabulous rings in the tub when I was finished getting the dirt off. Then in the morning the process started all over again.
Looking back, one of the things I remember is that I was rarely, if ever, sick. I had all the diseases other kids had, mumps, measles, and so on, but I never remember colds, or flu.
Today way too many kids easily catch colds and get the flu. Diet plays a big part in this, but so do a couple of other things.
1. Lack of sunshine…
2. Too much use of antibiotics…and antibacterials
The pharmaceutical companies have convinced the majority of Americans to fear the sun…in order for them to sell billions of dollars of sunscreen. Every years reporters and television journalists warn of the dangers of getting too much sun, and tell every one to wear lots of sunscreen and coverup.
Now they are doing the same thing to sell billions of dollars of anti-bacterial soap.
This may seem like heresy, but you don’t need either one.
Until very, very recently there has never been an independent study of sunscreen. Every study ever done on sunscreen has been done by the company selling the product. They have been the sole attorney’s, judge, and jury on their product, which by the way…they think is most excellent.
But new research is beginning to show that sunscreen may be…a very dangerous proposition. It contains 6 known carcinogens…which are activated by…sunlight.
But most important, sunscreen is blocking your bodies access to Vitamin D, which is very important.
Vitamin D deficiency causes fatigue, insomnia, joint pain, bone pain, muscle pain, muscle cramps, poor bone development, osteoporosis, dental cavities, bowed legs, and I could go on.
The solution: Sunlight
You can also get some Vitamin D from fish oil, but sunlight is still the best option.
And ditch the anti-bacterial soap and wipes. Kids who get dirty turn out to be much healthier than those who don’t. Nature has a role in all this, and with kids getting less time to be kids, it is important that they get outside every day.
The same advice goes for parents. The more sunshine you get, the healthier you will be too.
Eat good wholesome food, get moderate exercise, get some sunshine, take my Powerhouse Omega Formula, and make sure you laugh at least five times every day.
You know…I think I found a use for those anti-bacterial wipes. They work well when you check the oil in your car.

I’m sitting on the deck after a wonderful 4th of July with family and friends. The weather cooperated, even though the sun disappeared for copious amounts of time. But thankfully there was no rain to spoil the outdoor festivities, which included some delicious BBQ.
At Saturday’s shindig I had some of the best BBQ I have ever sampled, the recipes coming from a cookbook by a guy named Adam Perry Lang, who owns a BBQ joint in NYC called “Daisy Mae’s” on 10th Avenue. Let me tell all you BBQ fans, this guy knows what he’s talking about, whether it’s beef, pork, chicken…it was all awesome, and next time I’m in NY I know where I’m headed to lunch.
And I haven’t even talked about all the side dishes…can you tell I love to eat good food?
Last night before bed I was doing a little channel surfing, and I caught a bit of one of these fitness shows on what else…The Fitness Channel. The episode was all about a guy who was trying to lose weight and who had a problem with family gatherings where there were great quantities of food not on his meal plan.
There was all kinds of angst involved, and guilt, and lots of other BS thrown in for good measure. But the real problem was that the guy couldn’t deviate even a little from his plan, even though it was pointed out to him that eating small portions of what was served wouldn’t hurt him at all, and might even have been better than some of the stuff he was eating.
One thing that bothered me was that he was eating a lot of “diet food,” which included a lot of no fat and low fat foods, which are loaded with sugar, and don’t help you in the long run. He also had a diet soda in his hand constantly, almost like a baby with a pacifier.
Then he had to call his trainer for any decisions he had to make. But my big question was why would a good trainer let him eat all that crap? You would think that a good trainer would know what kind of damage all that artificial food does to your system.
I’m not knocking food plans. I have one for myself, and most of the time I follow it. But I allow myself to go off the reservation every now and then. This weekend was one of them. But I got back in the saddle last night, and had a nice salad. But I certainly wasn’t going to go to a BBQ and only eat the carrot salad, and pickled beets. (And hold the tofu…please.)
One thing I never do is miss taking my Powerhouse Omega Formula. That truly makes a difference in how I feel, not whether I ate a little too much BBQ. It’s better to be a shade pork plus than omega 3 deficient. I’m going to stop before the puritanical health gods cast me out as a heretic.
But I can state unequivocally, no lard was used in the making of this email.

One of the problems many people have with weight loss is motivation. People often start with great expectations, and then when they hit a roadblock, their plan or program comes undone, and they fall back into old habits.
I’ve found a couple of things that work for a good number of people.
1. Changing your mental pictures
2. Measuring
3. Keeping a journal
4. Accepting the fact you aren’t perfect
Many people who are overweight think of themselves as losers in some way, shape, or form. Eating for them is a sort of comfort therapy. They’re thinking, “As long as I have my potato chips and soda, I’m okay.”
This is delusional, but it’s true, and it needs to change. You need to start looking in the mirror and imagining yourself as healthy and fit all the time. This doesn’t happen overnight, but it is easily accomplished by practice. Changing the picture pays you huge dividends in the long run.
You will become what you imagine if you practice.
You can use a tape measure to get numbers if you want to, but I prefer pictures. When you start on a weight loss program, take pictures of yourself. Then imagine the new you, and get started.
Start keeping a diary, or a journal. You can do it on paper or do it on the computer. Every day you log what you eat, and the exercise you do. At the end of the week take another photo. 3 or 4 weeks into your program you should start seeing real changes in the way your body looks. 10 or 12 weeks in the changes should be major.
When you slip up, and you will, you log that too. This will help you to see where you have a weakness. But most important, don’t fuss and worry about it. Don’t try to double your exercise to make up for it. Just get back in your routine, smile at yourself, and let it go.
Your body will thank you.
Listening to your body will help you immensely. The more fit you get, the more your body will tell you what it needs, and if you don’t heed what it’s saying, you may get another signal, one that isn’t pleasant.
In addition to good food and exercise, your body needs certain other elements to function at a higher level. One of these elements is pharmaceutical grade fish oil, which I am offering to you as Dr. Bill’s Powerhouse Omega Formula, found at:
You should be taking my Powerhouse Omega Formula every day for any number of reasons, including optimal joint function, healthy brain and nervous system function, along with the cardiovascular benefits.
I’ve been taking pharmaceutical grade fish oil for quite some time, and I can tell you, for instance, that if I miss taking it for a day or two, my joints start talking to me.
(Say Bill…I don’t believe I’ve gotten any fish oil for a day or two…I’m going to send you a little reminder…how about your left knee…yeh I know it hurts…but next time don’t forget to pack it.)
It’s happened more than once, since I travel frequently, but I solved the problem by getting extras that are “travel only” bottles which never leave my travel bag.

I’m headed to family gathering this weekend up in Taxachusetts, although New York could own that title very, very soon. Free spending idiocrats in the legislature are looking to tax anything that moves, just like in Cali FORN yah, where where Schwartenzdummy is riding a wave that is leading straight to bankruptcy. His forlorn pleas to the Obamessiah have gone unheard, but maybe the new White House version of Jethro Bodine will hear the distress signal from the Three Mouseketeers: Pelosi, Boxer, and Feinstein.
And while the Taxocrats look to levy anything moving, companies will be looking to Nevada, Texas, Wyoming, and other sanctuaries where anyone can conduct business, without a creepy bureaucrat, in a cheap suit and bad shoes, following him around.
I’m going to stop, before I get rolling on a full-blown Dennis Miller rant, but these stupid people have to be stopped, before they shove the country into the same category as Albania.
For people on a health mission, or on a diet, holidays like the 4th of July can be tough on the old food plan.
Here’s my advice, and believe me now and listen to me later.
Don’t take your meal plan, or diet, with you when you go. I can’t tell you how many gatherings I’ve attended where some schmuck, (who by the way.. is a guest), tries to impose his or her food views on the host or hostess, or both, or all the attendees.
Nobody has to conform to your point of view (or wants to).
If the family is having a traditional BBQ, and you don’t normally eat that, suck it up and be polite, and eat a little chicken. It won’t kill you, or make you sick. You don’t need to know every ingredient in the food, unless you have a food allergy, and you ought to alert the host to that, way ahead of time.
And if you’re on a diet, eating some pretty rich stuff at one meal won’t slow your progress one whit. Just watch your portion size.
The holiday, or family gathering rule is, dont be a PITA (if you get my drift). You’re a vegan? Fine. Find some lettuce and graze away. You want skinless chicken? Pull the skin off yourself and shut up.
No diet or food plan is ruined in one meal, or over a day or two. What matters is what you do the rest of the time. Don’t be like a very famous doctor and his girlfriend I know, who took over thirty minutes to order lunch at a gathering I attended. The rest of the group wanted to pick up their chairs and beat them.
Taking my Powerhouse Omega Formula will keep you more mellow, than not. In fact, I’m double checking to make sure I have plenty for this trip. I might even take some, right now.
And if you’re looking for me, I’ll be close to the grill.

Now you might think I’m talking about the (Honorable) Barney Frank, a congressional representative and scourge from our liberal neighbors from Taxachusetts, about 4 hours north and 180 degrees left of where I reside presently. I’ve taken the pint-sized cockatiel crook to task before, so I’m not going to waste a column on him today, much as I would like to. Except to say that if his lips are moving, he’s telling a lie, and probably a real big one.
The fruit or vegetable debate comes from a trip to the grocery store, where I spotted cases of beefsteak tomatoes, one of my favorite foods.
My love of beefsteak tomatoes started when I was a kid. My mother introduced me to what we kids called a “Mato Sammich” which consisted of white bread, mayonnaise, and big slices of beefsteak tomato. We could polish off plates of these in no time flat, and when times were good, we could have a BLT, which in those days was living it up. Either way, I still love those tomatoes.
Today, I try and find a better bread than Wonder to go with the sandwich, but if I was pressed I would revert quickly to the old way.
The reason I’m writing about tomatoes is that they are a superfood, just like some of the others I’ve written about before (like pumpkin, spinach, walnuts, etc.).
Tomatoes contain: Lycopene, Vitamin C, alpha and beta carotene, Lutein, Potassium, B Vitamins, Chromium, Biotin, and Fiber.
Lycopene is the most important nutrient found in tomatoes, and it’s found in very few foods (like watermelon, pink grapefruit, red papaya, and persimmons).
Most Americans get their lycopene from three sources: ketchup, tomato juice, and pizza sauce.
One of the very important qualities of lycopene is that it is a very important part of the body’s defenses against skin cancer. By eating tomatoes in the cooked state, you help create a natural sun protection factor (SPF).
Lycopene also helps to prevent many cancers, including lung, stomach, and prostate. In addition, it’s a powerful risk reducer for cardiovascular disease.
Now…although I told you that I love tomato sandwiches, you get the highest benefit from cooked tomatoes. Cooking the tomato gives you eight times the benefit of raw tomatoes, and with the popularity of pasta, you shouldn’t have a problem getting the lycopene you need. If you don’t want pasta sauce, you can broil, or roast the tomatoes, to get the same benefit. And pizza sauce actually counts. Another way, gaining in popularity, is salsa.
The way to maximize the benefit of the tomatoes is to add a little olive oil. Studies have shown that this accelerates the dispersion of the nutrients. And to my thinking, it adds another flavor, too.
When you combine all these superfoods with my Powerhouse Omega Formula, you get a great synergistic effect for your health. Of course, you have to ease up on the crapola I’ve been talking about, too (like high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, et al), not to mention regular sugar, of which we all consume way too much. Remember, less than a century ago, our grandparents consumed only 3 to 4 pounds of sugar a year. Now, we each consume 160 pounds a year!
Is it any wonder the waiting rooms at doctors’ offices all over the country are full?

I’ve been busy as a three tailed beaver lately. In addition to my usual “honey do’s” and supplement research, I’m also writing a new book on things anyone can do to improve their health. I would say I’m about halfway finished with that project, in addition to all my other responsibilities, which begin with “She who must be obeyed.”
You can look for this labor of love sometime in the fall.
In yet another study from The Land Down Under, (Australia), it’s been found that eating highly processed foods, including the super sweet stuff from the bakery, has a deleterious effect on the eyes, as we get older.
Scientists from the Centre for Eye Research at the University of Australia studied the effects of diet on 6000+ volunteers, aged 58 to 69, being interested primarily in what effect diet had on Age Related Macular Degeneration.
What they found was that people who ate a lot of junk food were more likely to have AMD than those who had diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) is an eye disease of the center of the retina. It causes the loss of central vision, leaving a person with only peripheral, or side vision. I don’t know about you, but I prefer the full on version of Southhampton beach bunnies, and not a side view (though, truth to tell, that’s often not bad, either) . And it would be quite difficult to drive on my “honey do’s,” with only peripheral vision.
The study found that those who had a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids were 35% less likely to to have early stage AMD, and that they were afforded some measure of protection from the essential fatty acids. The use of olive oil in cooking also helps.
If you want fruit, eat the real thing, and don’t get it in a Danish, or piece of pie. And stay away from things that come in a box, or a package. Subsitute walnuts for peanuts, or get yourself some pumpkin seeds. I had some with a hot spice last week, and was stunned by how good they were.
And be sure and pick up some of my Powerhouse Omega Formula.
It’s easy on the eyes.

More and more people I know are complaining about headaches, and what they are doing about it isn’t really the answer. I would say that a huge percentage of people who have a headache reach for a bottle of aspirin, or ibuprofen, or even an anti-depressant. This response is almost automatic, because advertising has most of the public convinced that this is the answer.
It isn’t. Aspirin, ibuprofen, or other analgesics only treat the symptoms of headache, not the cause.
Let’s examine some causes of headaches.
Number one on my list would be: Sleep deprivation.
Studies have shown that if you sleep less than six hours a night, you’ll tend to have more frequent and more severe headaches than those who sleep eight hours, or more.
Number two would be: Caffeine
I can speak personally about this, and when I decaffeinated myself years ago, my own headaches went away.
Number three would be: Skipping meals, particularly breakfast.
Not only will skipping meals give you a headache, it will cause you to overeat, later in the day.
Coming at number four would be: Dehydration.
Many people substitute coffee, sodas, fruit drinks, and alcohol for water, and that’s a big mistake. You need a 1/2 ounce of water for every pound you weigh, and more if you exercise vigorously. If you’re a 200 pound man, you need 100 ounces of water every day (that’s more than the 64 ounces recommended in all nutrition books, which are way off the mark). If you’re a 200 pound man who exercises vigorously, you probably need close to 200 ounces of water.
Many people immediately say that’s too much, but if you have them keep a food diary, and add up all the crap they are drinking, it sometimes easily exceeds that amount.
Your body wants and needs pure water, not the other stuff.
At number five, I would put two things: Being overweight and inactive.
A recent study found that Lardassians, with a BMI (Body Mass Index) over 30, had a greater risk of headaches. When the BMI got up to 40, the frequency of headaches increased considerably . Other studies have proven that physically inactive people never get their “feel good” endorphins going. Physically inactive people also have a hard time relieving stress, and getting blood up to the brain.
The daily consumption of extremely high quality fish oil, such as my Powerhouse Omega Formula, seems to help in the fight against headaches.
So does the consumption of magnesium rich foods, such as spinach, barley, white beans, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds.
Getting a handle on the 5 reasons I outlined will help too. Get a proper amount of sleep, ditch the caffeine, don’t skip meals, drink lots of water, and get moving. Eat real food, and take my Powerhouse Omega Formula every day.

If you haven’t been living under a rock the past few days, you know that Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both died within hours of each other. I don’t want to forget about Ed McMahon either, but Ed was aged, and had lived a good, long life.
Farrah was 62, and Michael was 50. Both of them had a lot of years to go.
Farrah had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer, a procedure in which the “cure” sometimes seems worse than the disease. It often fails to resolve the cancer or stop the metastases (more cancer, in a different place), and that’s the cancer that eventually kills you, which I think is what happened to her.
Michael, like Elvis before him, was a prescription drug addict, with a suitcase full of medical ailments, often reactions to whatever cocktail he was being given at the time. He apparently had no one around him that could say no, and make it stick, or who had the strength (or authority) to throw the quacks out of his house…and life.
The L.A. Times has reported that Michael may have received too high a dose of Demerol (a narcotic pain killer) in a shot, something he reportedly took daily. If that was true, he probably just slipped away as his breathing slowed, then stopped, and his heart stopped beating.
There are many stories circulating about Michael’s health, and none of them are good. His body was deficient in so many ways it would be hard to list them all. He seemed to be sick, or have some kind of ailment almost all the time.
I was touched by a story I heard late Friday night, about the filming of one of his videos, in very harsh conditions, where he was ill again. While the crew readied for shots, Michael would curl up in a ball like a little child, a fetal position, and wait for his call. The cast and crew would then be astounded…because he would get up and dance, with the energy of one possessed, but then curl back up into a ball, again.
This happened over and over again, and cast members wanted him taken to the hospital. He finished the video, and then two days later, he went into the hospital for a week.
He obviously wasn’t balanced correctly.
He certainly didn’t get enough EPA or DHA. He was Vitamin D deficient, just from casual observation. I’m certain he had Vitamin B deficiencies, and was probably low on magnesium, potassium, zinc and a host of other vital nutrients.
In addition to the drugs he took daily, he apparently consumed large quantities of alcohol.
He had immeasurable talent, but at the same time, he was a train wreck.
When your body is battered and bruised, from substances it shouldn’t be ingesting, your mind pays a price. Most friends and observers described him as a 12 year old genius. How sad….
The human body is one of the most resilient organisms ever made. Years of abuse can be wiped out, with changes in diet and exercise habits, along with proper supplementation. It doesn’t take years. These changes can happen in days, weeks, and months.
Start with my Powerhouse Omega Formula, and lay yourself a new foundation. Then, slowly build on that foundation, with changes in your diet and exercise.
You’re going to like the way you feel.
I’ll be back tomorrow with more.
With my best wishes for your optimum health,
Dr. Bill
P.S. One of my clients in Colorado, (Jim A), told me my fish oil was “absolutely the best formula he has ever used,” and he gives it “five stars!”

Someday soon it will stop raining here in Long Island. It stopped raining on the golf course long enough for them to finish the tournament, which some guy won, whose name I never heard before. Tiger couldn’t hit a putt to save his life, and Phil couldn’t hit them, when he needed to, on the last four holes.
My lawn is so green from all the water that it’s in danger of turning too lush, which means I’ll be paying double to keep it down to four inches, since it will need work every week.
I saw a product on the shelf today that tries to be everything to everybody, which means that it won’t benefit anybody. It combines omega-3′s, 6′s, and 9′s, and touts itself as a cure for whatever ails you.
There is a word for that, and it’s “crap.”
The reason is simple.
Most people are deficient in omega-3′s.
Most people consume way too much omega-6.
Your body makes omega-9 on its own, without any help.
We take omega-3′s because they cannot be produced by our own body, and we have to get them from somewhere else. Back many, many moons ago, say 500, for example, omega-3′s and omega-6′s were in balance. But the modern diet, with all the processed foods, has tipped that almost perfect balance to 20-1, or more, in favor of omega-6′s, which isn’t doing us any good, whatsoever.
In fact, many physicians and health advocates now believe that the imbalance created by the high consumption of omega-6′s is responsible for a myriad of diseases. Some of those would be:
Inflammation
Poor cardiovascular health
Allergies
Immune disorders
Hormone disorders
Behavioral Disorders
This doesn’t hold a candle to the diseases caused by a lack of omega-3′s, which are all serious and too numerous to list here.
So it follows that any health product that mixes omega-3′s, 6′s, and 9′s is not a good thing, and not really needed in the marketplace. Not to mention it’s a misnomer, because it isn’t the least bit healthy to add fats we don’t need, or that cause us harm.
What almost each and every one of us needs is omega-3′s, pure and simple. We just don’t get enough, with the way we eat today, and if you want to avoid sitting in the waiting room, where lines are going to get longer and longer, go ahead and let us do the work, sending you your supply every month, so that you don’t even have to think about it. My Powerhouse Omega Formula is just what you need to keep your body fine tuned.
Almost everyday there is a new story of success with fish oil in the newspaper, in a magazine, even in professional publications. The British might only be good at cricket and darts, but they are real trailblazers when it comes to working with fish oil, and other herbal remedies. The Canadians are doing pioneering in this field, too, going back thousands of years, to study ancient formulas.
And here in America, Merck is trying to patent Niacin, so they can raise the price of a naturally occurring substance…

I had a lot of requests for the marinara sauce recipe without any sugar. It’s from Rao’s Cookbook, which is available at Amazon.com. Rao’s is a 48 seat restaurant in the Bronx, and don’t bother trying to get in, because it’s been sold out since the day it opened.
You can buy Rao’s sauces in any number of supermarkets, but if you want to make it yourself it’s pretty simple.
2 28 ounce cans of Italian Plum tomatoes with basil (preferably labeled San Marzano)
1/4 cup good olive oil
2 ounces pancetta or high quality bacon
3 Tablespoons minced onion
2 garlic cloves minced
Salt to taste
6 fresh basil leaves torn
Pinch dried oregano
Pepper to taste
Remove the tomatoes from the can, reserving the juice. Crush the tomatoes with your hands. Remove the hard core from the stem end, or any skin or tough membranes.
Put the oil in a large, non-reactive saucepan over medium low heat. Dice the pancetta or bacon, and add to the pan. Saute for about five minutes, or until all the fat has been rendered. Remove the pancetta or bacon and reserve for some other use.
Add the onion. Saute until translucent and just beginning to brown. Stir in the garlic, and saute for a minute. Add the tomatoes, their reserved juices, and the salt. Raise the heat, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes to an hour. If you like a thick sauce, add another 15 minutes.
Stir in the basil, oregano, and pepper, and cook for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat and serve over whatever you want.
That’s pretty simple, and simple is best. With properly cooked pasta, and some good fresh cheese, it’s a little slice of heaven.
From the University of California in San Fransisco comes a study that shows that men who have a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids had a 57% reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer.
Omega-3 fatty acids had a major effect on a hazardous variant of the COX-2 gene (cyclooxygenase), which promotes our old friend Mr. Inflammation, and is known to be linked to prostate cancer. Men with this variant have a more than five fold increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer.
But a high consumption of omega-3 fatty acids wiped out this risk factor.
Inflammation is being increasingly linked to all kinds of cancer.
One of the easiest ways to respond to inflammation is with pharmaceutical grade fish oil, and the best fish oil on the market is my Powerhouse Omega Formula.
My Powerhouse Omega Formula contains no: wheat, gluten, corn protein, yeast, dairy products, artificial colors, sweeteners, or preservatives. Why am I telling you that? Because that’s the kind of junk found in other fish oil formulas.
And each gel contains 780 mg of the essential fatty acids, EPA & DHA, which can help your entire body, including your heart and brain, function at a higher level. One coffee a day at Starbucks is more expensive than the Powerhouse Omega Formula, and won’t give you a tenth of the health benefits, and may even do you harm.
Buy a ticket on Dr. Bill’s Health Train. What you do now will make you healthy, both now…and later, when you really need it.
